Miami, Florida-based Ladenburg Thalmann Financial Services Inc. recently announced that the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s “Sand in my Shoes” award was presented to chairman and principal shareholder, Dr. Phillip Frost, and his wife Patricia Frost.
Presented by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, and Florida Blue, the “Sand in My Shoes” recognition is awarded to extraordinary community leaders who have made significant contributions to the region, demonstrating their involvement and dedication to Miami as an exceptional place to live and work.
Dr. Frost is also chairman and CEO of OPKO Health and serves as a trustee on various research institute boards. Mrs. Frost, former school principal, is currently on the Florida Board of Governors, watching over the state university system. Active philanthropists, the Frosts recently established a scholarship program for Florida graduates to pursue advanced degrees in STEM fields at Oxford University.
The award’s name came from a famous quote by the late Florida news director Ralph Renick, who responded in a letter to a friend citing reasons he would not leave Florida for California:
"The truth of the matter is, Bill, we’ve got sand in our shoes. It’s pretty difficult to explain that to anyone who doesn’t know what it means. It means a land covered with sunlight…the skyline of the city with twinkling lights…and always the sun shining down in kindly warmth.”
Previous award winners include Donna Shalala and Gloria and Emilio Estefan.
