The Watson Clinic Cancer & Research Center in Lakeland recently became Florida’s only facility to achieve the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer’s (CoC) 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award following thorough reviews.
Only those health care sites reaching the highest standards in cancer care are eligible for this prestigious award. The Watson Clinic’s cancer center is one of only six freestanding cancer centers in the entire country — and the only freestanding facility in Florida — to receive this honor. Having first gained the status in 2007, it is now reaccredited for its fourth consecutive three-year period with “gold status.”
The ACS Commission on Cancer surveyed 239 cancer centers nationwide before making its decision for this year’s awards. The Watson Clinic Cancer Center garnered gold status reaccreditation in every one of 34 categories assessed during the CoC’s rigorous evaluations.
Standards were measured for clinical trial accrual, registrar education, public reporting of outcomes, College of American Pathologists protocols, nursing care, rapid quality report systems and accuracy of data submission. CoC-approved programs ensure that patients have access to a multidisciplinary team of specialists, education and support material, data registries, consistent monitoring and lifelong follow-up.
“Most importantly, patients of an approved CoC program receive this expert care close to home – without having to travel to larger cities to secure the best care that’s currently available,” the Watson Clinic states on its website.
