Destin, Florida's Tower 1, overlooking the community from on high at 135 Benning Dr., recently earned a designation as an outstanding water distributor for Florida’s many consumers.
Situated atop one of the area’s highest elevations, the tower recently brought formal recognition from the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (FSAWWA) to Destin Water Users (DWU). Not only did it earn an AWWA Landmark award, but the 75,000-gallon tank was also honored with a 2015 Division 2 Outstanding Distribution System award of first place.
AWWA’s Florida arm selects outstanding candidates from among submissions statewide based on criteria including water quality, record accuracy, upkeep, worker professionalism, safety and emergency preparedness.
Representatives presented the award to Destin Water Users at a recent FSAWWA conference. Lockwood Wernet, DWU general manager, accepted the distinction along with employees and DWU’s board of directors.
FSAWWA plans to conduct a fundraiser during the upcoming Florida Water Resource Conference (FWRC) in Orlando April 24-26. Proceeds will benefit “Water for People,” a nonprofit organization helping developing countries improve quality of life via development of locally sustainable water resources, sanitation facilities and hygiene/health education programs.
The Florida Section of AWWA is located at 1300 9th Street Bldg. B-124 in Saint Cloud.
