Family-owned NJoy Spirits Distillery of Weeki Wachee in Hernando County, Florida recently brought home two gold medals from the San Francisco International Spirits Competition for their rum and whiskey creations, edging out thousands of other competitors.
Proprietors Kevin and Natalie Goff also came home with a gold medal for their best-in-class Mermaid Rum from the esteemed American Distilling Institutes (ADI) Spirits Competition held in San Diego.
Mermaid Rum is made from Florida sugar cane juice that is aged for three years, blended with Caribbean rum and aged again in whiskey barrels for 90 days. The recipe yields a smooth sipping concoction. Wild Buck Whiskey, the enterprise’s other signature product, has been rated among top whiskeys nationwide by Whiskey Advocate magazine.
“The key to our success is the attention to detail and the freshness of our rye grain,” the couple said. “From growing a portion of the rye grain on our farm to using twice filtered rainwater then aging in new barrels for 10 to 15 months in the Florida sunshine — the whiskey is smooth and like no other.”
NJoy Spirits Distillery recently expanded its footprint into Georgia as well as continuing its Florida distribution chain via local and regional liquor stores and restaurants. The Goffs plan to sponsor open houses at their facility later in 2016, for which reservations will be available.
