Florida Blue Foundation, a branch of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Foundation Inc., recently revealed Sapphire Award recipients in Orlando with awards totaling $350,000 allotted to exceptional health care people, programs and nonprofits.
Prizes were announced at a two-day symposium attended by regional and national health care industry professionals. Among winners were an Orlando dental care access program, a University of Miami mobile children’s clinic, a Tampa perinatal care practice and a Jacksonville psychiatrist helping the homeless.
Florida Blue Foundation based their choices of winners on the consensus of an independent panel of experts who assessed each entrant’s relative leadership, originality and accomplishments in the field of community health. Thirteen winners, runners-up and honorable mentions were named altogether, including HANDS of St. Lucie County, the Monique Burr Foundation, and Smiles Across Miami.
"We are honored today to recognize these community health leaders and nonprofits who embody our foundation's mission to provide effective solutions for their clients," Susan Towler, Florida Blue Foundation’s VP, said. “The Foundation is proud to recognize them for the excellent work they are doing to make Florida a healthier state.”
Since 2005 Florida Blue Foundation has presented Sapphire Awards totaling over $3.75 million to 58 groups and 15 individuals throughout Florida. The Foundation is a separate philanthropic arm of its parent Blue Cross companies.
