Florida-based health information network Availity, which maintains a hub in Jacksonville, said recently it is offering a low-cost online program that allows medical practitioners to meet HIPAA requirements with flexibility and security.

Health care professionals can purchase an on-demand training package through the Aaaility Learning Center for $19.99 that features Mike Sacopulos, CEO of Medical Risk Institute in Terre Haute, Indiana, who is well versed in privacy issues. Additionally, volume discounts are available for large practices.

Topics addressed in the training include viewing HIPAA as a patient safety issue; mental health protocols; surgery-related information and outcome handling; and business issues.

The U.S. Health and Human Services Department mandates security and privacy training for all medical personnel who come into contact with protected health information; Availity’s program not only provides the training but also tracks progress and records the results electronically.

"The security and handling of protected patient information is mission critical for any practice," Availity Senior Vice President Karin Lindgren, who is also general counsel and chief compliance officer, said. "One of the most important ways to guard against patient privacy violations is to ensure staff receives ongoing education and training on the latest threats and regulations."

Availity is a HITRUST-certified health care information technology firm facilitating over 8 million transactions on a daily basis.
