The University of Miami said its entertainment complex at its Coral Gables campus will now be known as the Watsco Center because of the steadfast long-term support from Watsco Inc., a national Miami-based corporation specializing in HVACR equipment.
Watsco, which distributes air conditioning, heating and refrigeration products and has 563 nationwide locations, has donated funding to the university for over a decade through its “Watsco’s Kids” initiative that gives area youngsters free arts, sports and entertainment experiences.
"(This) is an exciting new chapter for the University of Miami," University of Miami Athletic Director Blake James said. "Watsco has supported us in many ways through the years and we are thrilled to solidify their commitment over the long-term given their care and passion for the University of Miami."
The multipurpose arena was formerly known as the BankUnited Center and serves the region with over 200,000 square feet of space, 8,000 seats and 25 executive suites. The venue hosts men’s and women’s college basketball games; musicians; and community and political events.
"Continued support of the university's leadership, faculty and students as well as our community has been our goal over the past several years,” Watsco chairman and CEO Albert Nahmad said. “The university provides tremendous value to our community and we are proud to be a supporter."
