Tampa-based WellCare Health Plans Inc. recently said that nursing and business expert Elizabeth Miller will be its new state president with oversight of the firm’s Medicaid and Medicare Advantage clientele.
"I began my health care career as an oncology nurse with a strong desire to help vulnerable patients at such a critical juncture in their lives," Miller said. "I joined WellCare in 2012 with much the same intent – to help those who rely on Medicaid and Medicare live better, healthier lives. It's an honor to be named president and I look forward to continuing to find ways to improve access and quality for our members."
Miller earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing as well as an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Prior to her joining WellCare, Miller served at UnitedHealth Group and Genesis Healthcare.
In her new position, Miller reports to Division President Gregg MacDonald, who oversees a three-state area that includes Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
"Liz is an innovative health care leader with extensive clinical, operational and executive management experience," MacDonald said. "She has a deep understanding of what is needed to deliver quality health care to seniors, people with disabilities and those with low incomes. I expect her leadership to contribute significantly to our efforts to continuously improve the care and service we provide to more than 850,000 Floridians in partnership with the state and our providers."
As of the end of the fiscal year’s second quarter, WellCare served approximately 773,000 Medicaid members; 60,000 Florida Healthy Kids members; 92,000 Medicare Advantage members; and 29,000 Medicare Prescription Drug Plan members statewide. Nationwide, it serves approximately 3.8 million individuals.
