The St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce said favorable weather prevailed as the St. Petersburg Yacht Club recently held its fourth annual Sailing Club Championships featuring a new fleet.
Christened by club officers, the venue’s new cache of J70 sailboats led the competition as nine teams competed for the Commodore Bruce Watters Trophy. Multiple teams scored in the top three places at the finish following ideal nautical conditions.
Member Mike Funsch and his team members Joe Frohock, Bill Icely and Karen Park won the title for the second consecutive year, with second place awarded to David Mendelblatt, Dorothy Mendelblatt, Nick Carper and Mitch Rogers. Third place went to Past Commodore John Jennings and team members Jay Jennings, Susan Wallace and Teresa Hopkins.
The St. Petersburg Yacht Club was founded in 1909. The venue in downtown St. Petersburg serves as a central gathering spot for sailors and power boaters as well as serving for a desirable social center for community denizens.
