First Night in St. Petersburg said it is gearing up for its New Year's celebration with a 2017 Program Announcement Party from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ale and Witch, 111 2nd Ave. NE.
“We’re so excited to tell you about our program for First Night 2017 that we are throwing an announcement party,” organizers said. “Join us … to hear about all the great music, art and fun we will feature at First Night this year.”
Craft beer and live music is on tap for the evening, which will feature Cuban jazz from Gumbi Ortiz and New Groove City. Programs will be available and special buttons designed by local artist Coralette Damme will be available for $10 (adults) and $5 (children age 6 to 12), with children 5 and under free. Part of the evening’s proceeds will directly benefit First Night activities.

First Night 2017 plans for the Dec. 31 event, being sponsored by the St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association (SPDNA), are already in full swing, complete with kids’ activities, live music and dance, crafts and art activities.
Among the gala’s more unusual features will be human foosball and a giant sea creature procession with puppets, led by a local color guard troupe. Ice skating and tree climbing with an outdoor education group are also on the roster.
All the diverse experiences will culminate in a midnight fireworks display, but even small children will be able to enjoy the show, with “family fireworks” scheduled in the late afternoon. For more information about First Night, go to http://www.firstnightstpete.com/schedule.html.
