Two nonprofit groups that benefit Gulfport-area women and children will receive grants next year from the Gulfport Merchants Association, according to a Dec. 14 announcement.

Grant recipients for 2017 include the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund, which supports women’s medical needs not covered by insurance, and the Creative Play Preschool, which will use funds to creative an interactive outdoor learning lab and “mini food forest.”

The GMA board of directors select winners from a pool of applicants that are either based in Gulfport or who serve the area.

Funds are generated by Gecko Events held in the late summer, as follows: Art Gecko Show on Friday, Aug. 5; the Gecko Crawl on Saturday, Aug. 12; the Gecko Ball on Saturday, Aug. 26; and GeckoFest on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Dollar amounts will be announced after the events are held. Learn more at the association’s website.
