The St. Petersburg City Council recently took a step toward making Al Lang Stadium the home of a Major League Soccer team.

The St. Petersburg City Council recently took a step toward making Al Lang Stadium the home of a Major League Soccer team.

The council voted March 2 to slate a special election May 2 to give St. Petersburg residents an opportunity to vote on whether to give the City Council the authority to negotiate a long-term use agreement for the stadium, the Tampa Bay Rowdies said in a release posted on the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce website site.

Tampa Bay Rowdies owner Bill Edwards will pay the cost of holding the special election, the release said.

The Rowdies said in the release that the decision to hold the election allows the team to continue their hopes of bringing another major league sports team to St. Petersburg. The Rowdies also said they plan to renovate and expand the stadium in downtown St. Petersburg using private funds.
