Human rights activist and best-selling author John Prendergast will speak at Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport on Thursday, March 16, as part of the Florida Holocaust Museum's Genocide and Human Rights Awareness Movement lecture series.
The lecture, which is titled "Stopping Genocide by Stopping the War Profiteers" and being presented by Bank of America, will discuss the Darfur genocide, which began in 2003 and is the first genocide in the 21st century, a release on the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce website said.
"The Florida Holocaust Museum is committed to the intrinsic worth and dignity of human life," Bill Goede, Tampa Bay president for Bank of America, said in the release. "We're fortunate to have the museum in our community – and to hear from great speakers like John – to ensure issues like human rights are not forgotten."
In addition to writing about peace in Africa for more than three decades, Prendergast had helped establish initiatives to end genocide and crimes against humanity and dismantle networks that are financing atrocities and conflict, the release said.
"John Prendergast raises the bar for all of us as he continues to work for peace and justice in Africa," Florida Holocaust Museum Executive Director Elizabeth Gelman said in the release. "We hope that his work, his compassion and his resolve will inspire people of all ages to find tangible ways to make positive change in our community and our world."
