Analysis: Florida homeowners pay the 21st highest property tax rate in the U.S.


With an effective tax rate of 1.09 percent, Florida has the 21st highest tax rate among U.S. states and the District of Columbia, according to an ATTOM Data Solutions analysis of property taxes levied on single-family homes.

The data shows Florida has 5.1 million single-family homes with an average estimated value of more than $284,000. The average tax amount is more than $3,000. The effective tax rate is the percentage of a home's value the owner pays in property taxes.

New Jersey, Illinois, Vermont, Texas, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania have the highest effective tax rates – all above 2 percent. Twenty-four states have effective tax rates below 1 percent.

Hawaii homeowners pay an effective tax rate of 0.34 percent, ranking it the lowest in the U.S. Florida homeowners pay more than 220 percent more than they would in Hawaii.
